Four Generations of gold - Sweet Leilani of Lorel CD, Ch. Kel-Lani's Moonglow CD ROMC, Ch. Kel-Lani's Tycoon, Kel-Lani's Little Replica |
My Mom was one of the founding members of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of BC and had a wonderful little Sheltie "Kelly" that she trained in Obedience, and all from the book - "Training you to Train your Dog". "Kelly" won Points and Best Puppy in Specialty Show at the very first show of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of BC, and received his first leg toward his CD that same day. He went on to finish his Championship and also his CDX. He was bred by Starcross Collie Kennels of Haney, BC, and became BPISS Ch. Starcross Wonder Boy CDX. Our first female, Sweet Leilani of Lorel CD ("Lani") came from Vermont as a young puppy, sired by Ch. Notable Lad of Sea Isle (a brother of Ch. Stylish Miss of Hatfield). Kel-Lani is a combination of Kelly and Lani's names! My Mom and Catherine Moore were close friends, and through her became friends of Mary Van Wagenan and Evelyn Davis of Sea Isle, Carol Swartz of SheltieGlen and many other fanciers in Massachusets and Vermont.
I started in Junior handling, and showed our first homebred Champion (from our very first litter) BPIS Ch. Kel-Lani's Little Kelly CD to her titles. At her (and my) very first show, she won her first Championship points, Best Puppy in Breed, then Best Puppy in Group, then went on to win Best Puppy in Show! This was quite a feat back in the days when Shelties were still in the Working Group! I also trained her in Obedience where she earned her CD with a high score of 198.
Her sister was bred to Am/Can/Mex. Ch.Geronimo Son Rey, Am/Can/Mex. CD, whose daughter became Ch. Kel-Lani's Moonglow CD, ROMC, who was then bred to Am.Ch. Elf Dale Viking ROM, giving us the Top Winning Sheltie Puppy in Canadian History - from the Working Group - Ch. Kel-Lani's Moonshine ROMC - and before his first birthday won 4 Best Canadian Bred Puppy in Show, 8 Best Canadian Bred Puppy in Group, 9 Best of Breeds and numerous Group placements. Again, all from the Working Group!

After showing our lovely girl, Ch. Merithot Debutante, to her Championship title, I was thrilled she won BOS under judge Charlotte Clem McGowan at the BC Sheltie Specialty! |
Am/Can. Ch. Kismet's Crossfire with handler Ann Webster |
In the 1980's Ch. Kel-Lani's Candleglow and Ch. Kel-Lani's Soft Rock were just two of the lovely dogs sired by our stunning Texas import, Am/Can. Ch. Kismet's Crossfire. In 1986 we produced Ch. Kel-Lani's Mikhail ("Misha") who was a beautiful son of BIS Am. Ch. Macdega Canden Coming Home, ROMC. Misha's litter sisters ("Angel" and "Olivia") lived to be 17 years (2003), and then we lost Angel's daughter, "Michaela" in 2007.
Candleglow's litter sister, Kel-Lani's Cinderglow (8 pts) handled by my friend Norma - they went on to win Best Puppy in Group later that day! |
Ch. Kel-Lani's Soft Rock |
Though we haven't been active in breeding or showing since the early 1990's, we have always had a Sheltie or two as family companions, and maintained our ties with many dear friends in the Sheltie world.
We welcomed beautiful little Belmark Beloved at Kel-Lani ("Aimee") as a new addition to our family in 2010. She's a daughter of Am/Can. Ch. Belmark Lo and Behold, ROM, ROMC. In September 2011, Belmark Kel-Lani's Mardi Gras ("Mardi'") a striking little son of BISS Grand Am/Can. Ch. Jade Mist Belmark Bragging Rights. Both these gorgeous Shelties came to us through the generosity of Bella Thompson of Ohio.

With Aimee's puppies, sired by BPIS Ch. Shelhaven Eleven, we are becoming more involved with Sheltie activities once again, and look forward to meeting both new and old friends at the upcoming Shows and Trials!
